The best books like The Plated Prisoner start where its own blurb points. Raven Kennedy's page for Gild calls it "perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas and Jennifer L Armentrout", so A Court of Thorns and Roses and From Blood and Ash are the obvious first two. We've added two darker picks if the cage was the hook, one for the slow burn, and Kennedy's own new duology, out since September 22, 2026. The series page has all six of hers in order.

Before you pick, know which book you're matching. As of October 20, Gild has 431,136 Goodreads ratings and a 3.62 average, the lowest in the series. Book 3, Gleam, has the highest at 4.37. Every later book rates higher than Gild, so match the series, not book 1.

Heat numbers are on our spice scale, and each one names whose words it comes from. Gild itself is a 3, from Kennedy's own warning: "This book contains explicit content and dark elements that may be triggering to some."

The two authors Gild's own blurb names

That "perfect for fans of" line is on more blurbs than Gild's. To Bleed a Crystal Bloom's Goodreads description uses it almost word for word: "perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer L. Armentrout". From Blood and Ash's publisher says "perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Laura Thalassa". So the comparison is a sales habit as much as a reading note. Here it happens to fit.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Its blurb turns on one line, "Feyre discovers that her captor is not truly a beast", and a captor is half of Gild's setup too. It's also the closest match for how the heat builds. u/fivefuzzieroommates (19 points) wrote in an October 2025 r/Romantasy thread that The Plated Prisoner is "actually not very spicy for the first two books, but gets spicier as it goes." ACOTAR does the same: Common Sense Media's note for book 1, "more titillating than graphic", is a 2, and its note for A Court of Mist and Fury, "several vivid, prolonged, explicit sex scenes", is a 4. Another reader in that thread said the series "scratched the same ACOTAR itch". There's more like it in books like ACOTAR.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This is the pick for Auren's gilded life. Blue Box Press's description: "Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy's life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched." Poppy is kept apart for a purpose she didn't choose, and the guard assigned to her "tempts her with the forbidden". There's no Common Sense Media review, and the publisher only calls it "a sexy, addictive, and unexpected fantasy", which isn't enough for a number. Our books like From Blood and Ash list goes the other way, if you've read it and need more.

If the cage was the hook

A reader halfway through Goldfinch, in a March 2025 r/Fantasyromance thread, put it plainly: "I'm biased because I love the captivity trope". These two keep the heroine on someone else's terms, a locked tower and a guardian in one blurb, a bond she didn't choose in the other, and they're both darker or hotter than ACOTAR.

To Bleed a Crystal Bloom by Sarah A. Parker

It's the top reply, at 14 points, in a 2021 r/RomanceBooks request for books like the series. u/cloudsro11by called it "a dark fantasy romance inspired by Rapunzel" with "a lot of angst, plus a few steamy moments". Its blurb opens: "What a pretty flower to keep locked in a big, rocky tower." It's sold as a ward, a tower and a guardian who "knows too much and says too little". That's the closest setup on this list to Auren in Highbell.

The catch is the darkness. The same blurb calls it "a dark Rapunzel reimagining full of immersive imagery and breathtaking angst", and we haven't found an author or publisher content note to place on our scale. Read the trigger warnings before you start, as you would for Gild, where Kennedy's page lists "mature language, violence, death, and non-consensual sex." There are three Crystal Bloom books, from 2021 to 2023, and book 1 averages 3.67 on Goodreads, close to Gild's 3.62.

Quicksilver by Callie Hart

Pick this one if you want the heat turned up. Saeris "mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher, a handsome Fae warrior", and Common Sense Media rates it 18+ with "Explicit sex scenes include lengthy descriptions of oral and vaginal sex", a 4 on our scale. That's hotter than Gild's 3. It came up in a September 2024 r/Fantasyromance thread asking for books like ACOTAR, The Plated Prisoner and The Bridge Kingdom. One reply was just "Quicksilver!!!"; another reader, a quarter of the way in, said "I definitely don't want to put it down". A week later the person who asked wrote back to that reader: "I am tearing through quicksilver". Book 3 of Fae & Alchemy is due September 7, 2027. Our books like Quicksilver page already counts Gild as a match.

If the slow burn kept you going

The Awakening by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti

This is the odd one out, a modern academy, but it came up in two threads. One reader with ACOTAR, From Blood and Ash and The Plated Prisoner in their top five recommended Zodiac Academy because "It's got slow burn (steam doesn't really start till book 2)". That's the same rhythm readers describe for Kennedy's series. In a 2023 thread, a reader who'd read The Plated Prisoner after it said "The writing is somewhat similar." Book 1 is a 3 on our scale from Common Sense Media's "One explicitly detailed sex scene". It's a long finished series, and books like Zodiac Academy covers what to read after that one.

Bar chart of Goodreads averages for the six Plated Prisoner books, from 3.62 for Gild to a high of 4.37 for Gleam Image: FaeShelf chart, from Goodreads book pages, checked October 20, 2026

Where readers say The Plated Prisoner peaks

That chart is the series in one picture. Gild sits at 3.62, and the next five books all sit at 4.10 or higher. Goldfinch has about a third of Gild's ratings (153,660 against 431,136), so plenty of readers stopped somewhere. Where, though?

We went through the 20 highest-scored replies in that March 2025 thread, titled "The Plated Prisoner series is underrated and too often not finished". Twelve readers in them name the book where it peaked or went wrong for them. Two blame book 1: one couldn't get past it, and one says it could have been cut to six chapters. Three say it peaked at book 3 or lost them by book 4. Seven say the later books dragged or soured, and three of those stopped at book 5. Here's the most direct of the book 3 answers:

u/Cluckieduck (32 points): "I thought it built up through books 1 & 2, peaked at book 3, then went quickly downhill." Goodreads agrees on the peak, at least: Gleam's 4.37 is the series high.

There's a different kind of stop, too. One reader in the r/Romantasy thread "dnf'd at book three" because of "to much bad stuff happening (or happened during flashbacks) to the fmc", and wrote "I'm just not into high trauma especially when there is SA." If that was you, check the content notes before any pick here; the closest match, To Bleed a Crystal Bloom, sells itself as dark.

More Raven Kennedy: The Sweetest Fiend

If what you want is Kennedy's voice, she's got a new series. The Sweetest Fiend is book 1 of the Played by the Piper duology, first published September 22, 2026, and her site calls it "An Instant New York Times, USA Today, and Sunday Times Bestseller!" It's "set in a world of fae and dark magic, loosely inspired by the legend of the Pied Piper". The captive is back, too: "One hundred and thirty people are taken as payment. Including me."

Her note says it has "mature themes and explicit scenes only suitable for adults." Scenes, plural: on our scale that's a 4, one step past Gild's 3. Goodreads already shows 4.24 from 6,559 ratings, as of October 20, well above Gild's average. Her page gives no date for book 2.

Our take

Start with From Blood and Ash if Auren's gilded life is what stuck with you. A heroine kept under glass is the shared spine, and Armentrout is the second name in Gild's blurb. If you finished Goldfinch and want heat first, take Quicksilver. If you want Kennedy, The Sweetest Fiend is the easy call, and it's only book 1 of 2.

If you stopped at book 3 because of what happened to Auren, don't start with To Bleed a Crystal Bloom. On its blurb, the tower book is the closest match, and that's exactly the problem: the same blurb sells it as dark, and nobody official has said how dark.
