Emily Wilde Book 4: Out January 19, 2027, With Book 5 Next

Emily Wilde's History of Dark Faerie is out January 19, 2027 in the US and UK. Fawcett said in May she was writing a fifth, so book 4 opens an arc rather than closing one. Catch up on book 3 before January.

"I had thought for sure that the series was over!" ran the top reply (173 points) when Emily Wilde book 4 was announced on r/fantasyromance in May 2026. The book is Emily Wilde's History of Dark Faerie, out January 19, 2027 from Del Rey in the US and Orbit in the UK, and Fawcett said in May that she was already writing a fifth.

Not everyone cheered. Under the same news on r/CozyFantasy, a 65-point reply voiced the worry: "In order to tell a new story, something has to break... Not sure I want it too." The same reply hedged in its last line: "Kinda depends what's it about I guess." Our Emily Wilde series page carries the date.

The header says "Book 4 of 4: Emily Wilde". Fawcett's own count, in May, was five.

From a trilogy to five books

Three was the plan. According to Winter is Coming, Fawcett once answered a Goodreads question about the series' length with "There will be three books in total." Then, in May 2026, came the Instagram post, reposted in full on r/CozyFantasy on May 20: "After dodging many many questions about the future of the Emily Wilde series, I'm so happy to announce that there will be a fourth book". In brackets came the line that got 88 points of its own on r/fantasyromance when a reader pointed it out: "(And a fifth, which I'm currently writing".

The same post calls book 4 "a continuation of the series, not a spin-off" that "begins a new story arc for Emily, Wendell, Shadow, Ariadne, et al." Book 3 closed one arc; book 4 opens the next, with the same cast.

Bar chart of days between Emily Wilde books: 371 from book 1 to 2, 392 from book 2 to 3, and 707 from book 3 to book 4 Image: FaeShelf chart, from Penguin Random House's US hardcover dates

The calendar shows the pause. Books 1 to 3 came about a year apart. Book 4 comes 707 days after Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales (February 11, 2025), the longest gap in the series so far.

Emily Wilde book 4 is "a little darker"

Fawcett's words, from the same post: "a little darker than the previous instalments, but it's still cozy (by my definition, anyway!)". Replies in both announcement threads went straight to one character. "As long as darker doesn't mean Shadow passes away, I'm all in!" ran a 41-point reply. Shadow is Emily's dog.

The other change is the voice. Books 1 to 3 were read by Ell Potter and Michael Dodds; book 4 adds Sarah Cullum, for a book the blurb says is "Told from the perspective of all three characters". When the blurb went up on July 31, the top reply on r/fantasyromance (88 points) quoted that line back with a "hm": "this is clearly going to be different from the other books. i am excited but nervous lol".

On heat, FaeShelf has no spice number for any Emily Wilde book, and we'd rather leave it blank than guess from a cozy label. The nearest thing to a heat note is the Guardian line Orbit prints in its praise: "a low-key grumpy romance".

Spoilers for books 1 to 3: the blurb and the warnings

Spoiler warning: the book 4 blurb and its content warnings give away where books 1 to 3 leave Emily and Wendell. Skip to "Our take" if you're mid-series.

Del Rey's blurb calls Wendell Emily's "now-husband". Then "two years later, one of those friends goes missing" in Germany's Black Forest, and the blurb promises a portal to a long-lost realm Emily has named Dark Faerie, "the only place the Folk fear". Her niece Ariadne is with her.

Fawcett's site lists content warnings for each book behind a "may contain spoilers" click. Book 4's list is "Physical violence and gore", "Abduction/kidnapping" and "Abuse of a horse". That's the shortest list of the four; book 1's runs to six items. Short isn't mild, though. "And gore" appears on no earlier list.

Our take: read book 3 now or wait?

Read Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales before January if you've been saving it. One 46-point reply said "I've been putting off the 3rd book" because they weren't ready for the series to end. It isn't ending, and book 4 is 89 days out from our October 22 check. New to the series? Start with Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries; Del Rey put out a $38 deluxe hardcover of it on September 29, 2026. If you only start finished series, wait: book 5 has no title or date. One reader halfway through book 2 put it bluntly at 17 points: "I loathe reading incomplete series".

On Goodreads, as of October 22, 2026, each book has fewer ratings than the one before: 242,132 for book 1, 119,032 for book 2, 69,374 for book 3. Book 2 holds the best average of the three, 4.23.
